Availability of Broadband
The two most popular types of broadband in the UK, at the moment are ADSL and Cable. Although to the average user, ADSL Broadband and cable broadband perform the same, they are slightly different. ADSL: Offered by nearly every UK broadband provider, this is the most popular form of receiving broadband. ADSL reaches 99% of UK homes. ADSL is a data communications technology which enables fast data transmission over the UK telephone network.
One of the advantages of ADSL over traditional Dial-Up internet is that it is possible to use a phone line at the same time as using the internet with absolutely no interference between the two.
Cable:
is the system of providing television, telephone and broadband through the use of specifically installed cables in the street. Currently, the UK’s only cable broadband company is Virgin Media, who have cable lines throughout many areas in the UK. This company has developed from mergers between Cable and Wireless, NTL and Virgin Media. Cable is only available where cables have been laid so you need to be living in one of these areas. Cable is only accessible to 65% of homes in the UK although Virgin Media have plans to expand their coverage further.
